We are students, faculty, staff and community members working toward a more sustainable GCC. Sustainability is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Global Sustainability Initiative

Next Meeting: May 10

  • The next Green Efforts meeting is Thursday, May 10, from 4:00 p.m. onward at Applebee's located at 59th Avenue and Peoria.

April 19 - Earth Day & Dumpster Dive Events

  • Dumpster Dive V will be held on Thursday, April 19th, at 7:30 a.m. in the Central Mall, just west of the Library Media Center.
  • Dumpster Dive Results will be presented at 11:30 a.m. in SU-104D, followed by guest speaker Steven Betts of the Urban Land Institute AZ. Mr. Betts, currently the Chairman of the ULI AZ District Council and a trustee for the Nature Conservancy, will be speaking on his Rabbit Hole theory. The theory takes into account the recent recession our country has been experiencing and how emerging from the Rabbit Hole provides opportunities for us to create a sustainable urban community.
  • Earth Day information tables promoting recycling, trip reduction, and the Paper Reduction Campaign will be in the Central Mall from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

April 20 - Green Jobs Fair

  • GCC will be sponsoring our first annual Energy, Environmental and Green Jobs seminar. The event will run from 1:00-4:00 PM in SU-104.
  • Please encourage any/all students to attend. Faculty should consider offering extra credit for attending this event. Faculty offering extra credit will need to provide a sign-in sheet for the extra credit attendance. There will be a table inside for sign-in sheets.

April 23 - Shred-A-Thon

  • GCC's Alumni Association will be hosting a Shred-A-Thon on Monday, April 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. in the North Parking Lot. Bring your old bank statements, tax returns, etc. for shredding. A minimum donation of $5 will go to the GCC Alumni Scholarship Fund.

2012 RecycleMania Results

  • RecycleMania competition ran February 5 - March 31, 2012.
  • GCC set new recycling record of 13.43 tons during February 2012.
  • GCC earned 15th place for Waste Minimization competition, placing in top 10% of category.

Sustainability Board Information

  • GCC is planning a committee to address sustainability on a campus wide basis along with some of the activities to be addressed this spring.

Zero Waste Pilot Program

  • Zero Waste is a pilot program at GCC to minimize waste, maximize recycling, and reduce consumption. The pilot program begins in February and is limited to 200 volunteer participants. Click here for more information.

MCCCD Paper Reduction Campaign

A year-long paper reduction campaign will kick off October 26 with a Districtwide goal of reducing paper usage by 10% and gathering 10,000 signatures from faculty, staff, and students.

GCC Commits to Protect Climate

Last February (2010) Chancellor Glasper signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) to pledge all of Maricopa to become carbon neutral. GCC's Greenhouse Gas Inventory is now complete (links below). Please join us this year as we develop our Climate Action Plan.
